Features & Advantages

Features & Advantages

VIRTU is designed with the purpose to configure and control several applications in virtual machines environments. Moreover, it is oriented for automated-tests.

Features

  • Configuration and Deployment of Enterprise Applications.
  • Integration and interoperability with existing virtualization infrastructures (XenServer or VMware).
  • Fine-grained configuration of applications before and after deployment on VMs. Allows for:
    • Personalized provisioning of applications through user defined settings prior to deployment.
    • Test parameter insertion during pre-deployment stage, for automated tests.
    • Execution of automated tasks upon deployment.
  • Request & Acceptance workflow.

Advantages

Up until now, setting up an IT infrastructure (such as a data center, individual workstations or a complex distributed system) involved several repetitive and time-consuming tasks of:

  • Configuring hardware
  • Installing and configuring the Operating System
  • Installing the required applications.
  • Configuring each application for the user.

Through VIRTU, these tasks can be performed automatically, using a simple request & acceptance workflow, with a few mouse-clicks.

VIRTU stores all VM and Application configurations in its Virtual Machine template database, without the Virtual Machines and Applications having been yet deployed! These configurations can even be further configured during each VM request, through simple, user-defined parameters.

What's more, the number of VMs that are deployed can be 1, 10, 50 or whatever number you decide. A complete network of 50 workstations (with fully configured applications) can be deployed and readily available, with barely any human intervention.

VIRTU also offers many specific advantages for software testing and development:

  • Less time to deploy multiple systems and test multiple configurations (test replication with parameters).
  • Automation leads to a minimized risk of failure.
  • Improvement of user’s infrastructure management and machine allocation (on demand vs permanent)
  • Portablility of test and development environments.

VIRTU used for Space Market Applications

Software applications developed for the Space market are typically mission-critical, They can often undergo periods of maintenance and thorough testing. This process may involve:

  • Setting up development environments to be shared amongst a team.
  • Testing deployment, configuration and runtime of new patches and releases of the application, on multiple operating systems, requiring a clean install of the operating system and necessary third-party applications.
  • Conducting automated tests for faster development.

VIRTU can quickly provide VMs with the desired environment (operating system and applications), for development and testing.

VMs can be shared between users with simple mouse clicks.

Furthermore, VIRTU can offer greater flexbility for executing automated tests. By providing an interface that allows the user to specify specific parameter values, new values can be inserted for each each VM deployment. This offers the possibility of running tests on a new VM each time.

Value Chain Structure

VIRTU was developed through partnerships with Universities (Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade de Coimbra) that promote research activities and development in emerging needs in the virtualization paradigm such as Load Balancing, Elastic Computing and Availability.

A partnership has also been established with HP Labs for Control and Application Monitoring.
